Rain in the Mountains CD Cover

What others have said:

There are subtleties, skill and impressive musicianship in the way these songs have been put together and I suspect this CD and the live shows which Christine is planning will become a landmark in the interpretation of Australian folk song. Highly recommended for any festival programmer. [Graham McDonald, National Film and Sound Archive of Australia]

If no other tribute had ever been made to the achievement of Australia’s bard, this one would do very well indeed. A labour of love and an undoubted contender for folk album of the year. [Paul Cosgrave, broadcaster]

As I listen repeatedly to the CD I find a different favourite song each time. There are themes that are universally human, and others that are uniquely Australian; but all are handled with exquisite and sympathetic musicianship that is both relaxed and professional. Congratulations on an exceptional product - I reckon people in regional Australia will love the CD. [Dr Juliet Hunt, Eugowra NSW]

Past Carin’ is particularly good. I’ve heard a dozen or so now and yours ranks among the very best. I also like your own settings and find these to be among the most successful on the album. The playing is top quality throughout and your singing is a real pleasure to listen to. [Steve Ashley, Albion Band (UK) and composer of tune for Past Carin’.]

Rain in the Mountains: Songs from Henry Lawson is a set of songs created from the poetry of Australia’s national bard.

The show is receiving an overwhelmingly positive response, with comments such as, “the beauty of the songs brought tears to my eyes”.

Henry Lawson had a gift for conveying powerful feelings in the straightforward language of ordinary people, and the musical settings written or selected for this album enhance the emotional variety of his timeless lyrics. From country waltzes and Irish style slip jigs to exquisite, introspective airs and lively comic turns, jazz-tinged ballads and upbeat anthems, Christine has chosen settings by writers as diverse as country music icon Slim Dusty, John Schumann of Redgum fame, jazz composer Ade Monsbourgh, folk musician and mentor Chris Kempster and others, as well as several of her own originals.

Led by Christine’s classic folk voice and her flute and whistle playing, this concert will feature two other versatile musicians, Leigh Birkett on guitar and bouzouki and Simon Watts on fiddle.
