A free film screening . . .

Peter, Paul & Mary poster

To mark the passing of Mary Travers in September, we chose the 2004 Peter, Paul & Mary documentary 'Carry it on' for our second Humph Hall film screening.

In this film, Peter, Paul and Mary recall, along with mentors Pete Seeger and Ronnie Gilbert and others, the beginnings of the cultural revolution of the 1960s, when music became a unifying force amidst the hopeful, idealistic, and sometimes turbulent movements of social change. The film features rare archival performances of songs which energised the spirit of the nation's cultural and political renaissance. They include: "Blowin' in the Wind" from the 1963 March on Washington, where Dr Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his legendary "I have a dream" speech, and "The Times They Are A Changin'" sung at the Newport Folk Festival. These and other historic moments are woven together with songs and clips from the trio's four highly acclaimed PBS specials as well as intimate rehearsal renditions of new songs from their 2003 album "In These Times", their last album as a group - wait 'til you hear Mary singing "Jesus is on the Wire"!

Many people came along at 6pm with a plate and shared a meal with their neighbours. Duration of the film was 77 minutes. Following the film there was a short sing-a-long session of Peter, Paul and Mary songs led by Kate Maclurcan and others.

Photos taken during the event are available here.
